New climate change body recommended to government
A new climate change authority should be created to help the government get back on track with carbon reduction targets, according to a report.
The Enviromental Audit Committee's publication also stated that the UK is unlikely to hit its targets of reducing emissions by 20 per cent without reforms.
In the summary of the document, the committee stated that further changes to the economy were needed if the government is to meet "the scale of the challenge" that tackling climate change is bringing about.
It added: "We recommend that a new and authoritative body be established within the Cabinet Office to drive forward policy and to diminish the potential for a conflict of objectives between departments."
The release of the new publication has come less than a week after energy minister Malcolm Wicks said that the future of the UK's energy supplies should involve "a far greater role for renewable energy".
Speaking at the launch of a report outlining the security of the UK's energy resources, Mr Wicks also said the UK should move "as quickly as reasonably possible towards a low-carbon economy".
